A Note on Daily Deviation Features
At ten features into my tenure as Community Volunteer for Abstract & Surreal Photography I am noticing a certain trend in response to abstract and surreal Daily Deviations. I shall address some of the recurring themes here, and hopefully answer some questions along the way. At this point I would like to mention that I am talking about a small and vocal minority, and I sincerely thank the overwhelming majority for supporting the featured artists and their work. You're what makes this site such a great community.
With that said, let's get to the troublesome themes I am coming across.
The "This is crap!" Argument
As an observer and a critic, you're entitled to think that something isn't very good. However, exclaiming as such on the comments of a piece of work that an artist has spent time and energy creating is not only counter-productive, but rude and insulting, especially if it's not followed up with some advice about how you think they could make their

An Interview with-

limnides' Gallery
> Please introduce yourself, in your own words. What are your interests?
I’m limnides on here, but elsewhere I’m known as Alysia.  I come from a painting background, but my interest in light and time gravitated me toward photography during my second year at uni.  I also like to sleep.
> Where did you begin with photography? How did you come across Abstraction?
I’ve always had an interest in photography, I think.  My first camera was a purple 110 with Mickey Mouse on it... I liked the way the flash-bulbs would explode.  In high school I took a sem

PE: 10 tips and tricks not very known about PS
10 useful and not very known Photoshop tricks
1. Saving your .psd with all layers hidden makes a smaller file compared to saving it with all layers visible.
2. You can use the Crop Tool to quickly increase the canvas size of an image by holding down Ctrl + Alt whilst dragging the Crop Tool outside the current canvas.
3. If you want to see only one of your layers at a time, hold down Alt whilst clicking the eye icon of the layer. (do it again to show all layers again)
4. Holding down Alt while in a dialog box turns the Cancel button into a Reset button, so you can reset the values back to default.
5. If you want to just quickly check a very heavy .psd file, you can hold down Shift + Alt while clicking the Open button. This way Photoshop will open a flattened version of the file.
6. You can change the gray background that surrounds your image with the Paint Bucket Tool, just hold down Shift and make click on the background.
7. Not a very unknown tip, but if y

The Nature of Beauty

WeissChristian has too many Daily Deviations for me to feature him for another one, but I wanted to still bring people's attention to this amazing image.  Beauty is such an intangible, personal, changeable thing.  Beauty to one is ugly to another.  I look at this image, and I see beauty.  Her scars are beautiful.  She is beautiful.
You are beautiful.

ABCs of Deviants: KovoWolf
Welcome to ABCs of Deviants! Where I interview deviants from A to Z! :eager:
Amber is the Community Volunteer Mentor for Anthro within the communityrelations team. She is not only a pillar for the Anthro community, but for the whole deviantART community too.
Now, on with the questions!

Guardian Of Light by KovoWolf
Hi Amber! Tell us a little bit about yourself. :)
I'm an enthusiastic, multitasking, motivational, always try to inspire kind of person! I was born and raised in Southern California, I'm an identical twin, and I've been an artist all my life (or at least since I could remember).
How did you discover deviantART?
A friend of mine back on IRC had mentioned something to me about an art website that I might be interested in. Curious and excited I came

Artisan Crafts - Friday Interviews
It's Artisan Crafts month at ArtHistoryProject, to celebrate I will be publishing interviews on every Friday of December.  These four interviews will feature very different artisans.
Interviewing cakecrumbs
Where do you draw inspiration for creating art?
Via osmosis. It's actually amazing (and annoying) the times inspiration strikes. It's never the moments when I have freedom to make any creation and am desperately trying to think of a cool idea. I might be doing fieldwork or browsing the internet or a book or at a restaurant and see a concept or a shape and I start wondering, “How could I make that out of cake?” or “How can I put my own spin on this cake/dish?” Half the time I forget them. Often I’ll be lying in bed about to fall asleep and something will hit me. I’m known to leap out of bed at 3am and scribble ideas down.

Do you se

PE: Walkthroughs, an alternative way to learn

Walkthroughs, alongside tutorials, are always an excellent way to learn. It's really helpful to get educated through a tutorial which tells exactly what to do in a detailed way step by step. However at times what is even more helpful is to actually see the artist in action, there are things you need to see get done by yourself and here is where walkthroughs come into play.

There's always something fascinating about seeing the different stages of the creation process of a piece, and you can always learn from the artists and adapt part of said process to your own.

Besides showing part of this process through images which show the different stages of a piece, and

PE: Digital Art VS other categories
The category system within deviantArt has the purpose to organize the thousands of artworks submitted every day and group them together in accordance to style, media, genre and/or theme, etc. Imagine deviantArt without categories, it would be a chaos! Imagine yourself wanting to browse for photography only; without the system organizing every deviation by media, you would find yourself unable to filter artworks that aren't photography in your search results.
Thus the importance of categorizing your artwork correctly. By submitting your work to the appropiate category combined with a correct use of keywords, you're a step ahead of being discovered by people wanting to search for art like yours.
All this sounds so nice and all, but what happens when a particular piece could fit in several categories? The category system as it is now is very specialized and has literally thousands of different subcategories buried down tons of more subcategories, which is both a blessing and a curse. Havi

Traditional Tuesdays #80

Tue Apr 28, 2015, 6:40 PM

I'd like to welcome you to the eightieth edition of this article. THE STAR WARS EDITION! The first Traditional Tuesdays feature came out on Nov. 15 2011. The night I started this feature, I was bored and just browsing around the Traditional Gallery. I was finding all kinds great artwork, that for one reason or another I couldn't/wouldn't give a DD. It could be because they had a DD recently, but mainly it was for a link to go back and see what they created next, and if they took it to the next level. Now that I'm no longer a Community Volunteer, it can just be things that I like while browsing the Traditional Galleries. So.... here are eighteen works of art that I thought you should see. I can't trust all of you all with anymore awesomeness, you might hurt yourself! I hope you enjoy and find new things to love! Anyway, on with the show!

**WARNING: Viewing these works of art may cause giddiness, elevated heart rates, and happiness in the pants(which could lead to blindness)! YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!**
