PE - Furcadia Ports and Stamps: Categorization
Sometimes the category system here on dA can get a little confusing.  For example; you created a piece using pixeling techniques but you intend to use it as an icon.  Where do you categorize it?  A lot of people just are not sure.  So this article should help to clear it up.
When it comes to categorization, intended use can be a huge factor.  In this case, Furcadia portraits would belong in the Icons and Handhelds gallery instead of Pixel Art or Anthro, because while it may have been created pixel by pixel and the subject is anthro, it was created for use as a portrait (often shortened to port), with specific size parameters and place of display kept in mind.  By putting them in Icons, ports are easy to find and media doesn't separate them; some ports are not done in a pixel by pixel manner but as they are similar in theme and intended use, they should be seen in the same area.  As this is not the first time this has been discussed, I feel the need to

Jean Giraud (Moebius)

Jean Henri Gaston Giraud (also known as Moebius) was a French comics artist, working in the French tradition of bandes dessinées (bandes dessinées is derived from the original description of the comics art form as "drawn strips").

Many artists from around the world have cited Giraud as an influence on their work. Giraud was longtime friends with manga author and anime filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki. Giraud even named his daughter Nausicaä after the character in Miyazaki's Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind. Asked by Giraud in an interview how he first discovered his work, Miyazaki replied:
"Through Arzach, which dates from 1975, I believe. I only read it in 1980, and it was a big shock. Not only for me. All manga authors were shaken by this work. Unfortunately, when I discovered it, I already had a consolidated style so I couldn't use its inf

Literature
The most inspiring story ever!
A young woman named Baby Llama loved making art, and practiced drawing all day long to become the very best in all her town. But one day, she was completely stumped. She looked around her room, full of art pieces featuring mystical elephants, sci-fi landscapes of a futuristic Rome, and a portrait of Rowan Atkinson that looked so real, you could start a conversation with it. But nothing inspired her. Had she really created everything there was to create? Depressed, she looked out her window, and made a wish on a nearby poodle for inspiration to return to her. The next morning, she sprung out of bed, and used her skill in drawing to create the most beautiful deviation depicting guitars dancing anyone had ever seen. That night, she shouted out the window, "Thanks, poodle!"

PE: Pixel Art Tutorials
So you have discovered the wonderful world of pixel art and want to create your own :la:  But you don't know where to start or what techniques you might need to learn.  This article will give you some tips and tutorials to help you on your way.  Some links in this article do go off-site, as a warning.
Do I need a special program?
No!  Something as simple as Microsoft Paint, Paint Shop Pro or the Gimp, all of which are free, are all you need to start with pixel art.  Well, that and a mouse/touchpad (and a computer ;)).  Photoshop can be used to pixel as well, but it is costly, so unless you plan to use Photoshop for a multitude of digital media, it isn't the best investment for pixel art.
Free downloads of MS Paint and Paint Shop Pro can be found here: http://www.bunnystick.com/tdlc.html
What are some useful Pixel techniques?
When it comes to shading, both dithering and anti-aliasing (often called AA-ing) are your best

PE: Pixel Artist Interview with Cyangmou

Today I bring you an interview with a talented Pixel Artist by the name of Cyangmou.
:iconclefairykid: How did you get started in Pixel Art? Was it your first medium or did you work with something different before discovering it?
:iconcyangmou: I worked with several other mediums before, but only traditional ones, like pencil, ink and water colours. I started with pixel art because a friend made a game and it needed pixel graphics, then pixel art became a hobby and after that I started  to do visuals for games =)
:iconclefairykid: What is the thing you love the most about Pixel Art? What makes it stand out from other art mediums for you?
:iconcyangmou: Pixel art has the childhood-game-feel for me and it has the RETRO-factor. I played my first videogames on the SNES and my GBA brought me back those small but very detailed graphics with beautiful colours. The two most outstanding things of pixel graphics are form e that the graphics are us

Winners: When Darkness Falls Contest
Announcing the Winners of "When Darkness Falls"
We are pleased to announce the winners of the "When Darkness Falls" photomanipulation contest! This was an official, Community-Relations backed competition that was part of Project Educate: Photomanipulate back in June.
Voting was difficult because there were so many great entries, but when we got to work, three very clear winners emerged.
With more than 130 brilliant entries, we felt this contest was a resounding success. We wish to thank all of you who entered; you helped make it successful, and we are really grateful.
You can view all of the entries here.
You can read about the goals of the contest here:

The Pixel Art Community
Welcome to Pixel Art’s PE week! Firstly, I’d like to begin by discussing where we are in the Pixel Art community, where we came from and where we might head in the future.

Why discuss the definition of Pixel Art?
Why is it so important to discuss the definition of Pixel Art? It becomes important not only when it comes time to update the category’s description for the sake of organisation and clarity, but also when confusion and misconceptions become increasingly common among those in the community itself. As Pixel Art grew from being primarily used for old computer and gaming systems, that could not handle much data and therefore not too many colours per palette, into something used with more contemporary technologies like Photoshop and MSPaint, Pixel Art itself was bound to reflect those changes. This change has become apparent in new styles, new techniques and questions around the need for the “old rules” of past

Glen Keane - an icon in the history of animation

Born in Philadelphia in April 1954, Glen Keane is an American author, animator and illustrator who is widely known for his work in various Disney movies such as The Little Mermaid, Aladdin and Tangled, amongst others.

His father Bil Keane, cartoonist and creator of The Family Circus, played an important role in Keane's early interest in art, instructing him to analyze body forms and the creative approach to life drawing when giving him a copy of Burne Hogarth's Dynamic Anatomy.

After graduating high school, Keane went to the California Institute of the Arts where he was mentored by animation teacher Jules Engel, as his application was accidentally sent to the Program in Experimental Animation (called Film Graphics b

Traditional Tuesdays #80

Tue Apr 28, 2015, 6:40 PM

I'd like to welcome you to the eightieth edition of this article. THE STAR WARS EDITION! The first Traditional Tuesdays feature came out on Nov. 15 2011. The night I started this feature, I was bored and just browsing around the Traditional Gallery. I was finding all kinds great artwork, that for one reason or another I couldn't/wouldn't give a DD. It could be because they had a DD recently, but mainly it was for a link to go back and see what they created next, and if they took it to the next level. Now that I'm no longer a Community Volunteer, it can just be things that I like while browsing the Traditional Galleries. So.... here are eighteen works of art that I thought you should see. I can't trust all of you all with anymore awesomeness, you might hurt yourself! I hope you enjoy and find new things to love! Anyway, on with the show!

**WARNING: Viewing these works of art may cause giddiness, elevated heart rates, and happiness in the pants(which could lead to blindness)! YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!**
